Purpose:
Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is characterized by flakes of granular material at the pupillary margin of the iris and throughout the inner surface of the anterior chamber. This condition has extraocular manifestations which can affect the quality of life of elderly people. One of the complications of the disease is sensorineural hearing loss. Data about this complication is not complete and literature is somehow paradoxical. This study is aimed to Compare Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome with a control group.
Methods:
In this case-control Study, case group was consisted of 30 people suffering PXS and 30 age and sex matched healthy people as control group. PTA was done at 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 HTZ and the result was compared between two groups and also with the standard Iso7029. Data was analyzed using SPSS software 16th edition.
Results:
In this study mean age of participants was 75.17 ± 8.05 years. 43 percent were male and 57 percent were female. Mean hearing threshold was significantly higher in case group in all frequencies. Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss was significantly higher in case group in 2000, 4000 and 8000 HTZ.
Conclusion:
This study shows that the Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss is higher is PXS case which can affect their quality of life adversely. It also indicates that PXS is a systemic disease and attention should be given to all aspects of this disorder.
