Purpose:
To assess the prevalence of amblyopia, anisometropia and the types among 7-12 years old students in Yazd, Iran.
Methods:
In this cross-sectional study students were selected by multistage cluster sampling. The examinations include cycloplegic refraction, UCVA, BCVA and cover test. Anisometropia was defined as 1.00 diopter and more spherical equivalent cycloplegic refractions difference between two eyes. Amblyopia was defined as BCVA 20/30 or less or two-line visual acuity between two eyes.
Results:
Of the 783 participants, information was gathered of 775 students. The mean age of participants was 9.32±1.48 years old. The spherical equivalent cycloplegic refractions was 0.52±0.83 diopters. The prevalence of amblyopia was 1.46% (95% CI: 0.73-2.19). Among the amblyopic students 71.7% were unilateral and 28.3% were bilateral. The prevalence of anisometropia was 3.27% (95% CI: 2.13-4.25), Among the anisometropic students 26.4% had anisomyopia, 57.3% had anisohypermetropia and 16.3% had antimetropia.
Conclusion:
The prevalence of Amblyopia and Anisometropia among elementary students in Yazd is mid-range in comparison with other studies. According to influence of amblyopia and anisometropia on binocular vision it is needed to specifically attention paid to this subjects.
