Purpose:
To evaluate the serum vitamin D level in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and compare it with the serum vitamin D level in patients with diabetes without retinopathy
Methods:
in the cross sectional study thirty type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy and thirty ones without diabetic retinopathy were included. Subjects were tested for fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) levels, serum creatinine, urine protein. Vitamin D insufficiency was defined as serum 25-OH vitamin D level less than 30ng/mL.
Results:
All of our diabetic patients had mild deficiency of serum vitamin D (serum 25-OH vitamin D level= 10-20 ng/ml). The mean serum 25-OH vitamin D concentration in patients with DR was lower than those with non DR (12.10 ± 14.62 ng/ml versus 15.61 ± 9.40 ng/ml respectively, P=0.012). Patients with DR had higher level of proteinuria than those without DR (56% trace or more in DR versus 30% trace or more in non DR) (p = 0.037).
Conclusion:
This study demonstrated that all of our diabetic patients had deficiency of vitamin D and type 2 diabetes patients with diabetes retinopathy, had lower serum vitamin D levels than diabetic patients without retinopathy.
