Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of black tea drops formulation on reducing symptoms and signs of Vernal Kerato - conjunctivitis

Methods:

The present clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients with VKC randomly divided into two groups. The case group was administered cromolyn sodium and sterile back tea drops while the control group was given only cromolyn sodium drops. Both groups were treated and followed up for three months. Clinical symptoms (foreign body sensation, eye redness, ocular secretions, eye pain, itching, photophobia and lacrimation) and disease signs (redness, the presence of papilla and tranta dots and keratitis) were examined first at the time of the patient’s admission and three and ten days after the treatment and then every twenty days for three more times. The data obtained were analyzed using the Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact test.

Results:

No significant pre-intervention differences were observed between the two groups in terms of the severity of clinical symptoms or signs of the disease. After the treatment, the patients treated with black tea drops showed a significant reduction in their clinical symptoms and signs compared to the control group (P<0.05). The group treated with black tea drops showed no side-effects in the follow-up period.

Conclusion:

Black tea drops can be safely and efficiently used for controlling and reducing the signs and symptoms of VKC.
