Purpose:

To evaluate screening criteria recommended by the Iran Ministry of Health (IMHD) in diagnosis of ROP patients requiring treatment in Guilan Province of Iran.

Methods:

This cross-sectional retrospective study included all preterm infants with birth weight(BW) ≤2500 g and/or gestational age (GA) ≤36 weeks who had been referred to our hospital for ROP screening over a 10-year period from October 2005 to October 2015. Possible risk factors and findings related to eye examinations were extracted and analyzed. Sensitivity, Specify, Positive predictive value and Negative predictive value of Screening Criteria Recommended by the (IMHD) in Diagnosis of ROP Patients Requiring treatment was measured. Roc curve analysis was done to determine the GA and BW with 100% sensitivity.

Results:

Among 716 screened premature infants, ROP diagnosis was found in 164 cases (22.9%). Only Twenty two of them, needed treatment .The maximum GA and the highest BW in treatment requiring infants were 32 weeks and 1600 gr respectively. Considering GA≤32 weeks and BW ≤ 1600 gr as screening criteria of treatment requiring ROP infants, the sensitivity and the specificity were 100% and 26.8% respectively in diagnosis of treatment requiring ROP cases. By using the criteria of (IMHD), the sensitivity and specificity were 100%and 7.1% respectively.

Conclusion:

According to the results of our 10 years study, GA ≤ 32 weeks and BW ≤ 1600 gr seems suitable for screening treatment requiring infants with ROP in Guilan province.
