Retinal astrocytic hamartomas in association with tuberous sclerosis complex is considered to be a relatively stationary lesion that has little potential for aggressive behavior. We describe a patient with macular oedema secondary to tuberous sclerosis complex who was treated with intravitreal bevacizumab injection.

Bevacizumab 1.25 mg was injected into the vitreous of a patient with with tuberous sclerosis complex associated macular edema

A 8-year-old boy with tuberous sclerosis complex presented with loss of vision in the left eye for 1 week. Visual acuity was and 20/20 in the right eye and 1 meter finger count in the left eye. On examination the left eye had multiple lesions suggestive of retinal astrocytic hamartomas and cystoid macular edema. Bevacizumab 1.25 mg was injected into the vitreous and postoperative fundus findings showed improvement and decreased cystoid macular edema and visual acuity improved to 20/25

These results suggest that intravitreal injections of bevacizumab may be a useful therapeutic option for macular edema secondary to tuberous sclerosis complex.
