Purpose:
|
to evaluate the clinical characteristics, histopathology and
treatment outcomes in adult and pediatric patients with Idiopathic orbital inflammation
|
Methods:
|
This prospective study evaluates the demographics, clinical presentation, imaging and histopathologic features, and treatment outcomes of 76 patients with IOI
|
Results:
|
The mean
age was 41.68±17.62 (with a range of 6 to 75 years)
The most common signs and
symptoms were periorbital pain, periorbital edema, decreased ocular movements or
diplopia and conjunctival injection. The most common site of involvement either in adults or in pediatrics was the lacrimal gland and extraocular muscles. Most of the
pateints were treated by oral corticosteroids. Duration of follow up was 7.00±6.45
months. Recurrence occurred in 9 (11.8%) of patients during the follow up period
|
Conclusion:
|
IOI is a clinical syndrome which presents a vast group of signs and symptoms. Some of
its features may differ between adults and children. Biopsy should be done particularly
in atypical or treatment resistant patients. In most patients, treatment especially with
corticosteroids is needed to resolve the clinical findings
