Purpose:
A 47 years old male, with chief complaint of graduated loss of visual acuity (V/A) from 2 month ago was referred to Shiraz clinic of ophthalmology.
Methods:
V/A loss was began 4 day after last dose of using Closantel syrup, an anthelminthic drug which should only be used in veterinary medicine. There was V/A 2/10 for both eyes in the ocular examination. Also visual field defect was detected by static perimetry.
Results:
The case confirm the report of" 't Hoen and Hodgkin" that Closantel causes blindness in humans. Obviously, humans are more sensitive to this toxic effect than animals. In the report of 't Hoen visual acuity loss was reversible that is similar to animal's reports .
Conclusion:
The long lasting effect correlates with the slow elimination of the unchanged drug. Furthermore, the case indicates the remarkable risk of self treatment with drugs unapproved for human use.
