Purpose:

we studied whether adding contrast sensitivity test to present screening protocol is valuable or not.

Methods:

This was a cross-sectional study performed for 200 drivers that referred to ophthalmologic clinic of Farshchian hospital in Hamadan city during 2013-2015. Complete ophthalmologic examination, visual acuity evaluation and contrast sensitivity test were performed. Data were analyzed with spss software.

Results:

Two hundred patients with mean age of 39.6 were enrolled.. Most common refractive errors were concurrent myopia and astigmatism.Patients were enrolled in two groups one with normal uncorrected visual acuity and second group with normal corrected visual acuity . In normal visual acuity, the percent of abnormal contrast sensitivity (in order of increasing frequency ) in appropriative lighting condition were 0, 0, 8.3, 13.8, 22.2 in right eye and 0, 0, 10.8, 16.21, 18.91 in left eye and reduced lighting condition were 0, 13.8, 33.3, 33.3, 41.6 in right eye and 0, 21.62, 21.62, 27.02, 27.02 in left eye. With normal corrected visual acuity, the percent of abnormal contrast sensitivity test in normal lighting condition were 0, 14.28,35.71, 64.28, 64.28 in right eye and 0, 7.6 9, 46.15, 53.84, 84.61 left eye and 0, 50, 85.71, 92.85, 92.85 and 0, 61.53, 76.92, 76.92, 84.61 in reduced light.

Conclusion:

It seems that contrast sensitivity test be a better predictor of visual ability in comparison to visual acuity evaluation by snellen chart. It is recommended to related organization to add contrast sensitivity test to requirements of driving license.
