Purpose:
The present study was carried out to identify the factors associated with refractive errors regression in people undergone PRK surgery for different types of refractive errors
Methods:
This cross-sectional study included people who had undergone PRK surgery in the past and more than 6 months had passed from their surgeries were invited so that refractive errors regression and the related factors would be investigated.
The people were those who had had PRK eye surgery for the first time within 2013-2016 by TECHNOLAS 217z100. If an individual’s refraction was higher than 0.75 diopters spherical equivalent after cycloplegic refraction, it was defined as refractive errors regression.
Results:
Among the 293 eyes analyzed, different types of preoperative refractive errors were as follows: 5.5% myopia, 1% hyperopia, 4.8% astigmatism, 76% myopia astigmatism, and 12.6% hyperopia astigmatism. The regressed and non-regressed eyes were assessed using Generalized Estimating Equations in terms of probabilistic variables such as demographic characteristics, topography and eye refraction. The variables simulated k astigmatism (OR = 2.8, P = 0.04), irregularity 5mm (OR = 3.56, P = 0.01) and sphere value (OR = 1.98, P = 0.01) were significantly related with refractive errors regression, also There was no significant relationship between the regressed and non-regressed eyes of the same person P value ≥ 0.05.
Conclusion:
There was a positive relationship between the increase of irregularity 5mm, simulated k astigmatism, sphere value before surgery and the refractive errors regression. However, age, sex and type of refraction error of the intervention receiver and the expertise of PRK surgeon can change the general results. Therefore, not all people should be dealt with the same.
