Purpose:
To evaluate the synergistic effects of topical 2% cyclosporine for the treatment of acute anterior uveitis.
Methods:
In this randomized, double-blind clinical trial, patients with a first attack of unilateral acute non-granulomatous, non-infectious anterior uveitis were randomly assigned to receive either topical 2% cyclosporine (group A) or placebo (group B), both in association with topical 1% prednisolone. The primary outcome measured was the average time to resolution of inflammation (anterior chamber cells <0.5+).
Results:
Sixty eyes of 60 patients were divided into two equal groups. Resolution of inflammation in group A (21.3 days) was significantly faster than in group B (25.4 days; p=0.004). The average prednisone dosage used in group A (129.76 drops) was significantly lower than that in group B (164.6 drops; p=0.0001). Moreover, the average increase in intraocular pressure was significantly lower in group A (p<0.05) than group B.
Conclusion:
Topical 2% cyclosporine could be considered as an adjunct to topical corticosteroids for reducing the dosage of topical corticosteroids for the treatment of acute non-granulomatous, non-infectious anterior uveitis.
