Purpose:
To evaluate the serum 25-OH-vitamin D level in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and compare it with the serum 25-OH-vitamin D level in patients without AMD.
Methods:
this cross-sectional study was conducted with 55 patients diagnosed as having AMD (45 patients with wet AMD and 10 patients with dry AMD) and 55 controls without any sign of AMD ( non-AMD) who refer to ophthalmology clinics of Shiraz university of medical science. Subjects were tested for 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) levels, serum calcium level and serum phosphorus level. Vitamin D insufficiency was defined as serum 25-OH vitamin D level less than 30ng /mL.
Results:
The mean±SD age of patients and controls were 68.9±9.18 and 68.2±6.54 respectively. The mean±SD level of 25-OH vitamin D was 16.95±13.7 ng/ml (range 1.74–84.14) for the AMD patients and 17.53±12.4 ng/ml (range 2.01–80.19) for the controls (P=0.509). The mean levels of serum calcium and phosphorus were not significantly different between groups.(P=0.269 and P=0.178 respectively).
Conclusion:
This study demonstrated that all of our elderly population with and without AMD had some levels of vitamin D deficiency. Also it shows no association between vitamin D levels and the presence of AMD in this cross-sectional study.
