Purpose:
To demonstrate the efficacy of intraocular gas injection and limited face-down positioning for treatment of symptomatic vitreomacular traction(VMT)
Methods:
A case series review was conducted on 9 eyes with vitreomacular traction syndrome treated with intraocular gas injection and limited face down positioning. All eyes were treated with in-OR injection of 0.3 ml of SF6 gas and instructed to position face down part time for at least one or two days
Results:
Nine cases were reviewed. All eyes had VMT. Four eyes had a Stage 1 or 2 macular hole. Tow eyes with vitreomacular traction alone and no macular hole and four eyes with both VMT and macular hole had complete release of the VMT within one month after intraocular gas injection alone. In one eye with a Stage 1 macular hole ,Complete closure of the macular hole was achieved by week four. Mean visual acuity at 1 month improved slightly after injection. Central subfield thickness on spectral domain optical coherence tomography decreased in 67% of patients after injection
Conclusion:
Intraocular gas injection alone in the OR setting followed by limited face-down positioning appears to be a viable novel alternative for treatment of symptomatic VMT
