Purpose:
|
The ocular bioavailability of ophthalmic drugs, due to the eye's
various defense-protection mechanisms is limited, which requires the design of drug
delivery systems to increase drug delivery to the eye. In this study, two types of
liposomes containing ciprofloxacin formulation were evaluated in rabbit eyes
|
Methods:
|
This experimental study consisted of 10 rabbits divided into two groups:
group 1 received one drop of liposomal ciprofloxacin 0.3% uncoated in the right eye at
intervals of one hour to 6 hours, and group 2 received coated liposomal ciprofloxacin
0.3% in the right eye. One drop of ciprofloxacin (a commercial product) was poured in
all the rabbits left eye in similar intervals. Aqueous humor and vitreous samples from
all rabbits at the baseline, 1 and 6 hours were collected, as well as the drug
concentration was determined by HPLC techniques
|
Results:
|
liposomal formulations of ciprofloxacin had more than four-fold improvement in
ocular bioavailability in the rabbit's eye compared with a commercial product
|
Conclusion:
|
The increase in the ocular bioavailability of liposomal formulations, especially
topical drops, may be effective and help to treat bacterial endophthalmitis as well as can be
used in prophylaxis of post-operative endophthalmitis
