Purpose:
To describe a patient with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the orbit attached to the optic nerve.
Methods:
Interventional case report; review clinical, imaging and pathologic findings and treatment modalities
Results:
A 59-year-old woman with a 2-month history of progressive proptosis presented to us. She had 3 mm axial proptosis. Her corrected visual acuity was 20/20. CT scan revealed a clearly outlined heterogeneous mass with calcified foci attached to optic nerve, whereas MRI
showed an isointense signal to gray matter on T1- and T2-weighted images and also enhancement with Gadolinium was seen. Tumor exicion was perfound via lateral orbitotomy and pathologic examination showed mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the orbit. After surgery, radiotherapy and exentration were advised to the patient but she refused this recommendations due to good visual acuity. After 10 months of follow up there is no local recurrence or systemic metastasis.
Conclusion:
Mesenchymal chondrosarcom is a rare malignant tumor of the orbit difficult to remove when attached to vital organs.
