Purpose:

To report the outcomes of Ru-106 plaque radiotherapy versus other treatments for vasoproliferative tumors (VPTs) of the ocular fundus in a single referral ocular oncology center.

Methods:

The clinical charts of all patients diagnosed with VPT from 2002 to 2017 were reviewed. Clinical features, types of treatment, outcomes and complications were evaluated. Patients were divided to plaque radiotherapy group (A) and non-radiation group (B) (including Photodynamic therapy, Cryotherapy, Laser photocoagulation and Vitrectomy).

Results:

Of 46 patients with VPT, 25 (54.3%) underwent plaque radiotherapy. Nineteen patients (41.1%) were male. Mean age of patients was 40.9 ± 13.1 and 32.5 ± 13.3 in group A and B respectively (P=0.03). Eighteen (39.1%) had primary and 28 (60.9%) had secondary VPTs. Inferotemporal quadrant was the most common site of tumor (45.7%). Initial tumor length, width and thickness was 9.9 ± 3.5, 7.7 ± 2.9 and 4.3 ± 1.1 mm in group A versus 9.5 ± 4.3, 6.7 ±2.9 and 4.4 ±1.4 mm in group B; (All P>0.05). Postoperatively, the mean tumor thickness decreased to 2.59 ± 0.6 mm in group A and to 2.56 ± 1.6 mm in group B (P<0.001 in both groups and P=0.9 between groups). Visual acuity was less than 20/400 in 9 patients (36%) before treatment and 10 patients (40%) at last follow up in group A and in 10 patients (48 %) before and 11 patients (52%) at last follow up in group B. Complications occurred in 15 (60%) and 12 (57%) of patients in group A and B respectively.

Conclusion:

Ru-106 Plaque radiotherapy and non-radiation treatments both showed significant effectiveness for tumor regression and preserving visual acuity in patients with large VPTs.
