Purpose:
To evaluate the yield of Bactec Peds Plus F broth for culture of vitreous samples in comparison to conventional medium in cases of infectious endophthalmitis
Methods:
Consecutive cases of clinically suspected endophthalmitis enrolled in this study. culturing of the vitreous sample was done in both Bactec Peds Plus F broth and conventional mediums
Results:
40 eyes of 40 patients that had clinically suspected infectious endophthalmitis with different etologies enrolled in this study. The positive culture yield in was 65% and 35% in Bactec Peds Plus F broth and conventional mediums, respectively (P= 0.07). One case with pseudomonas had positive culture only in the medium. There no correlation between the method of vitreous sampling or history of intravitreal antibiotic injection and the result of culture between two groups
Conclusion:
Although the difference between two groups was not statistically significant in this study but the Bactec Peds Plus F broth showed higher positive culture yield. Conventional method is still valuable and we recommend combined method for culture of vitreous samples.
