Purpose:
The ocular injuries caused as a result of contract with chemical substances constitute cases of medical emergency. In order to treat them in an effective and quick manner, an immediate and accurate assessment of the type and level of injury is carried out
Methods:
Considering the topics and researches, this study was designed based upon various previous studies and analyses, while the research strategy was designed based upon keywords associated with the topic of treating ocular chemical damages such as ocular chemical injuries, ocular chemical burning, in a sensitive way. The keywords were searched in various data bases including Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, Pubmed, SID, and Cochrane and various papers published in English.
Results:
Ocular burns are basically divided into 4 phases including emergency, critical, primary care and delayed care. Washing the site of injury using solutions that suit the type of damage is the main and most important primary strategy in emergency phase. Using anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic substances is of significant importance in critical phase. Primary and secondary care use various corneal surgery and reconstruction methods including utilization of Limbal tissue and various types of stem cells transplantation.
Conclusion:
Although using new therapeutic methods such as various types of surgeries had opened a new horizon of therapeutic methods in this field, they still have their setbacks including failure of operation, especially by the immune system. As a result, it is necessary to conduct complementary researches and studies in this field.
