Purpose:
To describe outcomes of Trabectome surgery in a large cohort with various glaucoma subtypes over 12 months period.
Methods:
Data from 2,278 glaucoma patients who underwent the Trabectome procedure were analyzed. The subjects were divided into the following glaucoma subcategories: primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG), uveitic glaucoma, steroid-induced glaucoma (SIG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), ocular hypertension (OHTN), pigmentary and traumatic glaucoma. Wilcoxon test were conducted for detecting reduction of IOP and number of glaucoma medications. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used for survival analysis with success defined as IOP≤21 mmHg, at least 20% IOP reduction from baseline after 3 months for any 2 consecutive visits and no additional glaucoma surgery.
Results:
A total of 2278 glaucoma patients averaging 69 years old (range: 0-96) showed IOP reduction from 23.4±7.8 mmHg at baseline to 15.9±4.0 mmHg at 12 months (p<0.01), while the number of glaucoma medications was reduced from 2.7±1.3 at baseline to 2.0±1.4 at 12 months (p<0.01). The 12-month success rate of the overall group was 88%. The greatest efficacy and success rate in PEXG, SIG, and POAG. It was less effective in cases with NTG.
Conclusion:
Trabectome demonstrated success in reducing both IOP and the number of medications on a wide range of glaucoma conditions; however, proper case selection is important to achieve good surgical results.
