Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK)and simultaneous collagen cross linking (CXL) in keratoconic patients.
Methods:
In this retrospective, non-comparative, consecutive case series, 11 keratoconic eyes underwent TransPRK with CXL simultaneously for the correction of refractive errors and stabilizing progressive corneal ectasia in mild to moderate keratoconus using a flying-spot laser (AMARIS; SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions) and a PXL Sapphire 318-Medical Device (Peschke Trade). Complete ophthalmic examinations were performed before and after the surgery.
Results:
The mean age of the patients was 33±5 years (23---44 years) at the time of the surgery with a mean follow up time of 18±6 months. All patients had less than 5D irregular astigmatism and maximum keratometry less than 55D. Two years postoperatively follow-up time, 6 eyes (54%) had UDVA better than 20/40, and three eyes (27%) had UDVA of 20/20. Eight eyes (72%) were within 1.50D of attempted correction in spherical equivalent. No eye lost two Snellen lines of CDVA, and 5 eyes (45%) had more than two lines increase.
Conclusion:
Simultaneous TransPRK-CXL is a safe stable and efficacious procedure for the correction of refractive error and corneal ectasia stabilizing in mild to moderate keratoconus with a good visual, optical, and refractive results.
